Road Safety Trips All Pedestrians Should Know

Walking is a great way for anyone to exercise and get around in an environmentally-friendly way. With most people flocking to large urban centers, walking is becoming more common. However, due to the nature of busy, urbanized areas, pedestrians often have to share the roads with cyclists, drivers, and other hazards. This is especially true in busy intersections, where the probability for accidents is high.

For this post, we at the Law Offices of Dean Petrulakis want to share essential safety trips that all pedestrians should follow. As always, remember that our personal injury attorneys are always a quick call away. For now, be mindful of these tips as you walk around your town or city!

Follow all applicable laws: Pedestrians, like cyclists and drivers, need to be mindful of all the rules they need to adhere to.

Be predictable: Always move in ways that allow others on the road to easily track where you’re going. Avoid making sudden movements, turning sharply, and don’t unexpectedly run into the trajectory of others on the road.

Stay focused: Keep your eyes on your surroundings, be aware of all cars, bikes, and other people within your vicinity, and avoid looking down at your phone. Social media or Pokemon Go can wait, your safety is more important than your cellphone.

Be extra cautious when crossing intersections: This is where most accidents and collisions happen. Intersections should always be navigated carefully: check for well-lit paths to cross, obey all road signs and walk signals, and try to make eye contact with drivers/cyclists when it’s your turn to cross the road. This helps ensure that they’ve spotted you and are fully aware of where you’re going.
